Greetings from the President
  Dear ECSB member,

Our lives are surrounded by uncertainty. The world is repeatedly facing threats, such as disease outbreaks or natural disasters. But uncertainty encompasses a lot of positives as well: Remember the thousands of protesters who confidently stood up to the SED regime at Alexanderplatz, Berlin, on November 4, 1989. In November, Berlin is celebrating the 30th anniversary of the Peaceful Revolution and the fall of the Berlin Wall. With our flagship conference RENT we will be in Berlin to embrace the positives of uncertainty keeping the outstanding accomplishments from 30 years ago in mind.

On May 8-10, 2019, the 3E Conference will take place in Gothenburg. Under the theme “Entrepreneurial Bridging – between learning, value-creation, and…”, the local organizers, a team from Luleå University of Technology and Chalmers University of Technology: Kaarin Kivimäki, Mats Lundqvist, Mats Westerberg, and Karen Williams Middleton are welcoming us to Sweden. We will get an excellent opportunity to debate and exchange our research and experiences on the major challenges of entrepreneurship education. Please visit the conference website for more details about the programme, registration, and conference venues (https://3e2019.org/).

The ECSB is an affiliate of the ICSB which is inviting our global community to join the 2019 International Council for Small Business World Congress in Cairo from June 18-21. Researchers, educators and policy makers from around the globe will get the opportunity to engage, share and discuss research insights. More information is available at http://icsb2019.com/

RENT 2019 will take place in the vibrant city of Berlin in Germany. Berlin is seen as one of the best start-up hubs in Europe and beyond. Please, join us on November (27) 28-29, 2019 for an inspiring first-class event under the theme “Embracing uncertainty: entrepreneurship as a key capability for the 21st century”. The local organizers René Mauer and Yi Jiang have planned a memorable event for the participants. Deadline for submission of abstracts is May 15, 2019. In addition to the main conference, ECSB offers a pre-conference day (November 27) with various workshops that address the needs of young and established researchers of the ECSB community, including our new mid-career faculty consortium. ECSB is dedicated to career development of its members. Please, consider joining our activities and visit our constantly updated website: http://www.rent-research.org/rent-2019.

If you like to make the most out of your Berlin trip to RENT in November, you may want to consider attending the Effectuation Conference (Nov 24-26), also planned as a pre-conference to this year’s RENT and hosted by ESCP Europe. All information can be found at:  www.effectuationconference2019.escpeurope.de. The deadline for submissions is also May 15.

There is more to detect in our newsletter, such as our several co-branded events in 2019. This year’s events co-branded by ECSB focus on diverse topics and they will be located in different countries and regions in Europe.

Before I finish, I’d like to congratulate Ulla Hytti, member of the ECSB board, for receiving the European Entrepreneurship Education Award which recognizes her excellent contribution to the improvement of entrepreneurship education in Europe.

I look forward to seeing you at our events to share new ideas, discuss the latest research, and get involved in our community.

In the meantime, I wish you a lovely spring time and a happy Easter.
Yours sincerely,
Silke Tegtmeier

Application deadline: 15 June 2019 The Doctoral Workshop represents a unique opportunity for doctoral students to present their thesis proposals and obtain useful insight into how their work can be improved and progressed as well as an opportunity for bouncing ideas off on experienced faculty. The workshop also facilitates the exchange of research experiences and new ideas in the fields of entrepreneurship and small business. The ECSB Doctoral Workshop is truly a meeting place for both new and experienced researchers from all over Europe and an ideal place to start networking. We particularly encourage students in the early stages of their research to participate as a way of launching themselves into the international research community. Doctoral candidates interested in attending and presenting their research proposal should send a two page abstract including information on when they commenced their Ph.D. study and when they expect to complete. The abstract should be sent to Dr. Helle Neergaard (Helle.Neergaard@mgmt.au.dk) no later than 15 June 2019. No fee is charged for participation in the Doctoral Workshop. Application deadline: 1 July 2019 Have you recently finished your PhD Thesis in entrepreneurship and the small business field and are now wondering what’s coming next? Do you want to learn more about publishing your research? Do you need advice on your latest research proposal or an article you are working on? Do you want to set up (international) research collaborations, and are looking for collaborators? Join us at the next RENT post-doctoral paper development workshop! ECSB is offering a workshop for EARLY CAREER RESEARCHERS, with preference given to those who have finished their PhD within the past 5 years. The post-doctoral paper development workshop activity has two parts: a face-to-face event that takes place a day before the RENT conference and an on-line follow up. Those papers presented at the 2019-2020 post-doctoral paper development workshop will be eligible for the POST-DOCTORAL PAPER DEVELOPMENT WORKSHOP AWARD (7th edition). The number of participants is limited to 12 researchers so we encourage early submission. Those attending will receive a grant related to a fee reduction in the RENT conference. No fee is charged for participation in this workshop. However, participation in the RENT Conference is compulsory.  The application should be sent to Cyrine Ben-Hafaïedh (c.benhafaiedh@ieseg.fr) no later than 1 July 2019. Join us at the Mid-Career Faculty Consortium! ECSB is offering a workshop for faculty who are at a mid-point in their academic career (at least 5 years of academic experience up to recent full professors) and who would appreciate advice and information about different career options after tenure. This Consortium features a panel of distinguished faculty and will provide a unique opportunity to network and discuss professional challenges, problems, and opportunities facing faculty advancing into their “Associate and early Full Professor years”. To ensure this Consortium is an effective exchange forum, we wish to limit registration to 10 participants. If interested, please apply by sending an e-mail message (with “ECSB Mid-Career Consortium” in the subject line) to Cyrine Ben-Hafaïedh at c.benhafaiedh@ieseg.fr by 1 July 2019. Professional Development Workshop (PDW) proposals   Deadline for PDW proposals: 1 June 2019
by e-mail to Mirela Xheneti (m.xheneti@sussex.ac.uk)   Professional Development Workshops (PDWs) were included in the programme of the RENT pre-conference day for the first time at RENT XXIX in Zagreb 2015. The concept proved to be successful and PDWs are now part of the pre-conference day. PDWs are workshops to share knowledge and expertise and foster practical, professional and intellectual skills of participants. PDWs need to have a clear theme and target group as well as deliver a high level of learning and give the participants some clear ‘take-aways’. The format of a PDW should be dialogical and interactive, so no presentation of papers will be possible in these sessions. Quite apart from the professional development side, these PDWs should also promote networking among members who may not meet otherwise. The PDW will have a set timeframe of 2 hours and will be scheduled as afternoon sessions on the pre-conference day on 27 November 2019. Participation in PDWs is free, but participants need to be registered for the conference in order to join. Proposers choose the session format, but PDWs have a maximum of 30 participants each. Any topic will be considered, however, we have a limited opportunity due to facility restrictions. Therefore, the Scientific Committee will screen proposals and choose those we believe have the broadest appeal for delegates. 3E 2019 Conference in Gothenburg, Sweden on 8-10 May 2019

Conference theme: Entrepreneurial Bridging – between learning, value-creation, and… Unlike more traditional academic events, the conference will focus on problems and questions rather than on ready-made solutions and presentations of research findings. We expect to have an interesting programme with around 120 participants. The first day, 8 May, is dedicated to Practitioner Development Workshops and 9-10 May to Research Papers. Conference registration is open. Visit 3E 2019 website Don’t forget the ECSB’s Co-Branded Events in 2019!
